Alice M. Diegel, age 91, formerly of 3622 Forest Circle, Manitowoc, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County, Two Rivers.
Alice was born on March 2, 1921, in Valders, daughter of the late Ole and Mayme (Miller) Ellestad. She graduated from Valders High School with the class of 1940. She took many courses from the Vocational School. Alice worked at Penneys, Sears, Grants, Kreseges and Pearl's Hat Shop. Alice worked for many years as a nursing assistant at Memorial Hospital in Manitowoc. She married Vernon E. Diegel Sr. on October 23, 1948 at First Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on February 20, 1990. Alice was a member of First Lutheran Church, Hanna Circle, and the Lupus Society. She loved rosemaling and belonged to the Viking Rosemalers.
Survivors include four children: Larry (Fayne) Diegel, Rhinelander; Mary Turner, Manitowoc; Margie (Donald) Kester, Tamaqua, PA; Vernon (Theresa) Diegel Jr., Mishicot; eleven grandchildren: Mark (Gretchen) Diegel, Menasha; Craig Diegel, Toronto, Canada; Tom Diegel, Spokane, WA; Brenda (Alan) Leick, Manitowoc; Rick Turner and his fiancée Petrea Wallander, Manitowoc; Sherrie (Brian) Buckholder, Maryland; Cathy (Curtis) Hafer, Florida; Priscilla (Craig) Giese, Mishicot; Erik Diegel, Greenleaf; Kristofor Diegel, Oshkosh; Thor Diegel, Mishicot; seven great grandchildren: Erik (Amber) Turner, Two Rivers; Tom (Beth) Leick, Manitowoc; Jason Leick, Manitowoc; Bethany Hafer, Florida; Mathew Hafer, Florida; Joshua Hafer, Florida; Haley Buckholder, Maryland; special friends: Iva Jean Daniels; Menominee Falls, and Irma Skatrud, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents: Ole and Mayme Ellestad; her husband: Vernon E. Diegel Sr.; one grandson: Robert Diegel; three sisters: Myrtle and William Schlei; Lorraine and William Drumm; Florence and Jules Henriott; and one infant brother: Mervin Ellestad.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at First Lutheran Church, 521 North Eighth Street, Manitowoc. Rev. Roald Harswick will officiate. Burial will follow at Valders West Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.
